TRAINING PROGRAM FOR TEACHERS IN THE BASQUE COUNTRY
Transforming Learning By Basing it on the Infusion of Critical and Creative Thinking into Content Instruction
During the course 2016-17 the Center for Teaching Thinking is offering to all teachers in the Basque Country a program designed to train participants in the classroom techniques of Thinking-Based Learning and to coach each teacher as they construct and teach TBL lessons that incorporate these techniques. This program will be structured to lead participants to become certified by CTT as Model TBL Teachers.
TBL lessons are lessons in which content learning is based on students learning and using important thinking skills, including analytical, critical, and creative thinking skills, to engage with the content. This is accomplished in student centered collaborative thinking groups guided by teacher prompting and guiding. This contrasts with memory-based learning which limits students understanding of curriculum content. Hence, students develop important thinking skills that will enrich their lives, and achieve a deeper understanding of what they are learning that enhances their classroom performance. As a bonus the workshop presenters will show teachers how to do this in ways that enrich the learning and use of Euskera.
This program includes three two-day workshops, paced from September to January. The first two of these workshops will be followed by individualized coaching as the participants teach TBL lessons based on the thinking skills introduced in these workshops. Certification follows the implementation of lessons on the TBL thinking skills that are the focus of Workshop 3.
Dr. Robert Swartz will be the lead presenter in these workshops, accompanied by a team of trained and certified TBL workshop presenters and coaches.
WORKSHOP 1 (23-24 September 2016) 09:00 am-17: 00 pm
This workshop will introduce teachers to what thinking skills are, how to teach them, and how to structure classroom for maximum effectiveness in helping students learn how to use these thinking skills and apply them to important curricular content. Four thinking skills will be introduced through lesson demonstrations and teachers will have the opportunity to develop ideas on how to teach these skills in their own instructional context.
Participants will be expected to try lessons on each of these skills in their own classrooms following the workshop. Individualized coaching for each participant on one of these lessons will be scheduled as part of this.
WORKSHOP 2 (4-5 November 2016) 09:00 am-17: 00 pm
This workshop will concentrate specifically on creative and critical thinking. Participants will be shown, again through lesson demonstrations, how to teach students two specific creative thinking skills and two specific critical thinking skills. Once again, opportunities will be provided for teachers to develop their own ideas for TBL lessons for their students on these skills.
Participants will be expected to try lessons on each of these skills in their own classrooms following the workshop. Individualized coaching for each participant on one of these lessons will be scheduled to follow this workshop.
WORKSHOP 3 (27-28 January 2017) 09 a.m.-17: 00 pm
This workshop will concentrate on five additional thinking skills. One will be on the important type of thinking that we all need to engage in with skill regarding the reliability of sources of information. In addition four rich thinking skills of analysis will be presented, again by lesson demonstrations, and teachers will develop their own ideas for lessons with their students on these skills.
The training program will be held at the facilities of Colegio Mayor Olarain in San Sebastian. Situated at sea level 300 m. from Ondarreta beach, in a peaceful, relaxing place. Olarain is a place where modern pieces coexist with antiques drawn from cultures around the world.
The cost of the program depends on the workshops that you want to attend. To obtain certification as a TBL teacher it is necessary to attend all three workshops, develop and teach lessons on the thinking skills presented in the workshops, be coached by a TBL coach as you teach some of those TBL lessons, and submit a dossier on your TBL teaching at the end of the program. Registration and payment for each workshop can be made together prior to Workshop 1 or prior to each workshop.
